Educational Support for Girls in Ghana

Ghana

A recent initiative on the part of Global Ministries partner in Ghana, the Christian Council of Ghana, involves providing scholarship assistance for girls to facilitate their attending school.

Many poor families in Ghana hesitate to send their daughters to school for two reasons: 1) the expense; and 2) many families prefer for their girls to remain at home and work in household duties along with their mothers.

The Women’s Groups from the local congregations of denominations pertaining to the Christian Council are working with a local non-governmental organization in order to verify the applications of and select the families to be supported in order for their daughters to attend school. They then work with the governmental educational authorities in the placing of these girls in schools. Ghana’s department of education currently has a nation-wide campaign Good Quality Universal Basic Education in Ghana and, therefore, welcomes the increase of numbers of girls in school.

The scholarships cover books, school supplies, uniforms, and any incidental expenses incurred by studying (i.e. transport, lunches).
