spacer The Reformed Church of France

The Reformed Church of France (ERF) is the largest protestant denomination in France (350.000 members, 500 ministers). Its first synod was held with Jean Calvin in 1559. It was reorganized into its present shape in 1938 as the unification of an orthodox and a liberal tradition and the Methodist Church. The ERF strongly believes in God's undeserved grace that structures Jesus-Christ's social and liberationist ministry. The Church values the protestant notion of “universal priesthood” by encouraging lay ministry and by defending a democratic way of being (all ministers are payed the same, strong sense of intern debate, equality between local and national level). The Church is very much involved in theological, ecumenical, social and mission work. Its main challenge is to be remain present, as a minority in a strong secularized country, as an open and affirming community.
