Judy Chan, GM Missionary serving in Hong Kong, Reflects on the China Olympics
"For much of the world, the past 17 days have been consumed by the 2008 Summer Olympics. Yet, Hong Kong has been watching and waiting for seven years since Beijing was awarded the Games in 2001. When it was first announced, I worried whether China would be able to live up to the promises made to the international community. I knew money was not an issue but everything else might be..." Kids to Kids is Changing and Expanding in Many Exciting Ways
For over a dozen years Kids to Kids has been helping Disciples elementary age children understand the needs of others and how they can respond to those needs through over and above giving.  Now Kids to Kids is also becoming more ecumenical as children from The United Church of Christ are being invited to join in the work. The hope is to make the new program totally web-based and interactive with new art work, new mission projects in North America and around the world.  A curriculum component is being added that will be useful in vacation church school and adaptable to other learning situations such as Sunday morning church school, youth group meetings and intergenerational gatherings.  Each year, the vacation church school program will focus on a different country in which Global Ministries international partners are serving.  Kids to Kids will continue to lift-up mission programs of the wider church as well as local programs like yours. If your congregation has an outreach project that serves children in the wider community and you would like for it to be considered as a Kids to Kids US/Canada Mission Project, please contact Kaye Edwards kedwards@dhm.disciples.org or Lutgarda Lee leel@ucc.org to acquire an application.

Vacation Bible School in Sycamore, Illinois Making a Difference in Kenya
The Vacation Bible School of the Mayfield Congregational Church in Sycamore, Illinois, decided to respond to a missionary letter from Phyllis Byrd, Global Ministries missionary in Kenya, about crops in Kenya being destroyed by worms.  They focused their efforts on raising funds for the farmers in Kenya.  The Vacation Bible School was held in a Day Camp format at a local farm.  Each morning, the children would gather in a circle in the barn around a 50 lb. bag of rice.   They discussed how shipping a bag of rice, though greatly needed by the people in Kenya, would cost too much; instead children were challenged to bring what they could every day.  Once they experienced the joy of giving, they brought more.  They put the money in a grapefruit juice can so the children could shake it and nothing would fall out.  At the end of the week, they had collected $149.00 for the farmers in Kenya.  A real success story from the children of Mayfield Congregational Church!  If you have a story to share, please send it to:  Ginny Haag, Office of Resource Development, P.O. Box 1986, Indianapolis, Indiana   47206-1986, or send by email to:  ghaag@dom.disciples.org

Martha Millet, Former Missionary in Turkey, Passes Away
Wider Church Ministries/Global Ministries sadly announces the passing of Martha Millett, former missionary to Turkey, in Pilgrim Place, Claremont, California on August 22, 2008 after a long illness. In 1951 she was appointed by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) as a teacher of English and Mathematics at the Uskudar American Academy, a private secondary school founded by ABCFM missionaries and serving Turkish girls in Istanbul. Her devoted and exemplary service to the school continued until her retirement in 1989. To read more, click here:  http://www.globalministries.org/news/losses/death-of-martha-millett.html
