World Refugee Day, June 20
The Refugee & Immigration Ministries programs of both the UCC and the Disciples encourage congregations to recognize World Refugee Day on or around June 20. Church World Service provides a worship resource appropriate for use as a bulletin insert called "Real People, Real Needs" click here for information and resources: http://globalministries.org/news/us/world-refugee-day-june-20.html

Asia Communication Sunday, June 21
Our partner churches across Asia are celebrating Asia Communication Sunday on June 21, 2009 with the theme, "Communication is Peace: Taking sides to build viable Communities." A resource booklet begins, "The world is experiencing peacelessness throughout the globe… All our Communication efforts should focus on bringing the people at the margins to the center." The booklet is co-edited by missionary Judy Chan and is accessible here: http://www.waccasia.org/index.php

The "Initiating Foreign Assistance Reform Act of 2009":

  • Requires the president to develop and implement a comprehensive National Strategy for Global Development.
  • Requires the president to develop and implement a rigorous system to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of U.S. foreign assistance.
  • Requires that both American taxpayers and recipients of U.S. foreign assistance have full access to information on U.S. foreign assistance.

Global Ministries is asking that we refocus and streamline U.S. aid to developing and hard-hit countries. Then the U.S. can make its humanitarian and development dollars go further making an even greater difference in the lives of impoverished and hungry people around the world. More information on reforming foreign aid can be found at http://www.bread.org/
