Westside Mission’s story is one of our Disciples’ responses to Hurricane Katrina.  It tells the story of how the Great River Region created the Westside Mission Center, Brother Vance’s call to serve, how Disciples came together to serve needs in New Orleans through this ministry and learned that what we were doing was “Critical Presence.” 

Brother Vance wrote Critical Presence: It’s a God Thang for three reasons:

1.     Over 4,000 volunteers came and experienced God at Westside. They came to give of themselves. As they gave they received in abundance. Critical Presence: It’s a God Thang tells their story and mine.

2.     The people of New Orleans are a remarkable people. The greatest natural/man-made disaster of all time has made them stronger.

3.      Five years of work helping to rebuild New Orleans taught me the meaning of “critical presence” (meeting people at their point of deepest need).  Critical Presence: It’s a God Thang is an excellent guide to beginning, enhancing, and growing outreach in your church.
