Puerto Rico Religious Leaders Call for Jubilee
A coalition of ecumenical and religious leaders in Puerto Rico issued a statement on August 31, 2015 calling for national debt-relief in response to the island’s economic crisis.
Nearly half of Puerto Rico’s population lives in poverty. In June the Governor announced that government can not pay its $72 Billion debt, which represents $20,000 for every person on the island. A coalition of Catholic and Protestant leaders have joined in a statement calling for a biblical Jubilee in response.
You can add your name to a Jubilee USA petition to the U.S. Congress to pass legislation giving bankruptcy protection to Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, an appeal to the Federal Reserve to grant debt relief, and a case to the White House to help resolve Puerto Rico’s desperate situation.
Take Action! in support of the religious leaders’ statement by calling on Congress to give Puerto Rico bankruptcy protection.
