March 20, 2007

To commemorate the United Nations' International Day of Water, the United Church of Christ, with the support of the Ecumenical Working Group at the United Nations, is sponsoring an afternoon of events on the theme of water issues around the world.

Thursday, March 22, 2007
Church Center at the UN
(1st Ave. & 44th St./SW corner)

Celebration of God's Gift of Water
12:30-1:15 p.m. (Tillman Chapel)

Film / Panel / Reception
1:30-4:30 p.m. (Hardin Room, 11th floor)

The centerpiece of the afternoon will be a one-hour film, "Troubled Waters," produced by the United Church of Christ in partnership with the ABC-TV network.  The screening will be preceded by a worship service in the Church Center Chapel.

The film will be followed by a panel of experts who have done water-related work in the field, including speakers from UNICEF (Kate Weber), the Indigenous Peoples' NGO (Roberto Borrero), the UN's Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Frederik Pischke) and the Earth Values Caucus (invited).  The concluding speaker will be Rajyashri Waghray, Director for the Program on Education and Advocacy for International Justice and Human Rights, Church World Service, who will tie together the development, health and ethical nexus of world water issues.

Clean and safe water, scarcity, water rights and a focus on how these issues affect women and children will all be addressed.  Please come and join with others who share water-related concerns. There will be time for Q&A, followed by a reception and an opportunity to talk with the panelists.
