Pray with East Timor Sunday, August 9, 2020
Lectionary Selection: Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28
Prayers for East Timor:
East Timor has so far navigated the viral pandemic with ZERO deaths. Pray that the country’s leadership in government, health care, and education, can continue to guide the people through the coming months with continued safety and health for all. Pray for Indonesia, which is East Timor’s next-door neighbor, who is suffering with over 85,000 cases and 4,000 deaths. Indonesia creates a real threat to East Timor because they share this single island, and there is a lengthy land border, which can be porous. This means that sick people who may not be detected and quarantined appropriately may enter. Pray that the Timorese people will continue to support each other, as families and as communities, through the coming months of the pandemic, come what may. Pray for the health care workers across this half-island nation, especially the staff of Clinic Imanuel Lospalos, that they may continue to do their critical work, and have all the tools needed to keep their communities safe and healthy in the coming months.
Mission Stewardship Moment from East Timor:
Wear a mask, wash your hands, stay six feet apart from your neighbor. In Lospalos, Clinic Imanuel and Imanuel Church staff are doing their best to follow these international guidelines in a context very different from our own in America. Global Ministries allocated funds to our partners in East Timor, the Protestant Church, to address food security issues. In Lospalos, our church leaders delivered sacks of rice and cooking oil to the most vulnerable members of the congregation. Clinic Imanuel staff have been making community rounds, going door-to-door in neighborhoods to educate families about coronavirus and prevent infection. Most people don’t have access to computers, though cell phones are prevalent. The clinic staff provides accurate and relevant information, which is needed to counter misinformation and confusion often encountered on social media. In East Timor, most people have no running water in their homes. While the clinic in Lospalos does (usually) have running water, the church does not. This means a bucket with water pulled from the church well becomes a hand-washing station for Sunday School kids.
Global Ministries keeps us connected to the realities that our brothers and sisters in Christ face day by day. With the current situation of a global pandemic, we are helping our overseas partners access the most basic of resources: food and water, and health education, to make a lifesaving impact.
