Pray for Morocco on Sunday, October 25, 2015

Lectionary Selection: Mark 10:46-52

Prayers for Morocco:

Dear God,

Sometimes we get so caught up in being a part of the Church that we forget your message. In our rush to feel like a member of something important, we miss the point and become exclusionary.

Forgive us for being a part of Jesus’s crowd and yet denying the blind beggar his voice;
When we ignore suffering;
When we mistake our privileges for things we have earned;
When we claim exclusive ownership of the truth.

Yes God, forgive us our ignorance and put in its place the wisdom to encourage and bring suffering people to you.

 

There are also times when we are the blind beggar desperately calling out.
For those of us in need, give us faith in your healing.

Pray today for the Christian community in Morocco and its leadership. Pray also for those who are struggling to find a better life in a foreign land.

Mission Stewardship Moment from Morocco:
The goal of migration is always a better life. This could mean escaping a bad situation or simply seeking a better one, but facing the unknown always requires courage. There is also an element of aspiration – if I can just get where I am going my life will be easier, but it often isn’t that simple.

Many end up stuck along their route, trapped in a country like Morocco which serves as the funnel through which African migrants and refugees might attempt to make their way into Europe. Some succeed, but many more don’t.

This is how a person finds him- or herself in a country in which he or she usually has very little access to a difficult job market and a lack of funds for continued travel, further education or even basic necessities. In this situation, any hope that existed in that initial aspiration can quickly erode.

The EEAM has several programs to help reestablish not only financial autonomy, but also a sense of dignity and hope to people who find themselves in this difficult situation. In addition to facilitating training programs with local professionals in varioius fields, teams in several cities accept applications for personal enterprises to be micro-financed and accompanied by the Church.

Effective support should address both a person’s material needs and their mental/spiritual needs. A dignified response to a problem as serious as poverty in the lives of migrants and refugees can be the necessary spark to ignite a positive change in someone’s life.
