CONASPEH Webinar with Francoise Villier
You are invited to join us on Thursday, February 27 at 2 pm ET, for a live update on the situation in Haiti and the work of the National Spiritual Council of Churches (CONASPEH) with its President, Bishop Francoise Villier. Please register here.
Haiti was the first black republic in the 19th century, created by a revolution that overthrew slavery maintained by French colonial rule. But independence came at a cost and Haiti had to pay billions in compensation, which left the country bankrupt since its creation. Added to the nation’s bankruptcy, high levels of inequality, poverty and corruption have persisted over the years, and political attempts to fight corruption have not ended well.
In 2010, a powerful magnitude 7 earthquake left the country destroyed and killed between 200,000 and 300,000 people. It left more than 1.5 million people displaced and the international community saw the disaster as an opportunity to rethink foreign aid. Little has changed in Haiti a decade after the devastating earthquake. Socioeconomic crisis continued to be a permanent crisis for the country.
CONASPEH has been accompanying and assisting their communities through disaster relief consisting on the reconstruction of schools and health clinics, fostering sustainable development efforts, providing theological education to understand this context of crisis and hope better, and giving follow up to the needs as they surface every day.
This webinar aims to analyze the actual social situation in Haiti as well as to share the work of accompaniment and solidarity that CONASPEH develops with churches and the Haitian community.
