Global Ministries is saddened to learn of the death of Alma Schneider
Alma Charlotte Schneider
February 17, 1918 – August 6, 2016
Alma Charlotte (Miller) Schneider, a longtime resident of the Pilgrim Place retirement community in Claremont, California, died Saturday, August 6, 2016. She was 98.
Alma was born February 17, 1918 in Orella, Nebraska to Alva Theodore and Amelia (Smith) Miller. After receiving her teaching certificate from Chadron State Teachers College in 1937, she taught in various one-room schools throughout Nebraska. On May 27, 1943, she married Reverend Fred Schneider. From 1947 to 1959, the Schneiders served God’s people in Argentina through a predecessor mission body of what today is Global Ministries. They served the Congregational Church of Argentina at the seminary in Concordia, Argentina. While in Argentina, Alma was a strong supporter of her husband’s work as seminary superintendent; oversaw and undertook the duties of maintaining the seminary dormitory with a motherly touch, where many residents were German-speaking students from Brazil; and often taught piano to the seminary students.
Alma Schneider retired in 1980 and continued to maintain an active lifestyle at Pilgrim Place in Claremont, California. She is survived by her four children: Fred Schneider (Dorothea) of Waldport, Oregon; Charlotte Meyer (Jim) of Helena, Montana; David Schneider (Natalie) of Billings, Montana; and John Schneider (Roxanne Batt) of Prescott, Arizona. She also is survived by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a special niece, Naomi Cavaness.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on September 5 in Decker Hall at Pilgrim Place. Private interment, with family and close friends in attendance, will take place at Oak Park Cemetery, with Todd Memorial Chapel assisting with arrangements.
Alma’s family wishes to thank the staff of Pitzer Lodge at Pilgrim Place for their many years of dedicated, loving care. Special thanks are also in order for the care received at Pilgrim Place Health Services Center and the compassionate care given by Vitas Hospice staff. Memorial contributions may be made to the Residents Health and Support Fund (make checks payable to Pilgrim Place with RHSF on the memo line), Pilgrim Place, 625 Mayflower Road, Claremont, CA 91711.
Condolences may be sent to the family through Alma’s son, Fred Schneider, P.O. Box 1507 Newport, OR 97365.
