Charlotte F. Evans
March 31, 1930 – May 4, 2014
Charlotte F. Evans, known as Totty to family and friends, of West Bend Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 4, 2014 at Aurora Medical Center in Hartford Wisconsin at the age of 84 years. Charlotte was born in Hamden, Connecticut on March 31, 1930 to the late Wilfred & Clara Freeman. She and Stephen Evans were married on June 15, 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut.
From 1967-1971, Charlotte and Stephen served in Micronesia, assigned by the United Church Board for World Ministries (a predecessor mission body of Global Ministries) to serve the Mizpah High School of Micronesia. Stephen Evans writes: Our students came to us speaking five different languages, and learned, studied in, and became proficient in English, so that in three or four years they could graduate and attend colleges (in the Philippines, New Guinea, Hawaii, and the continental U.S.). The students then returned and became leaders of the new Micronesia which was breaking in on them in a new age. I (Stephen) served as Chaplain and taught the religion classes (Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, Christian Education) as well as English as a second language. Charlotte helped in any way possible, including helping young Chuukese children learn English on our front porch, while at the same time home schooling our own three young daughters, who were four, six and seven when we arrived to Micronesia. She also provided a caring home base and sometimes eating arrangements for some of the single missionaries and a few of the many wonderful Peace Corps Volunteers whom Mizpah attracted to teach with us.
Charlotte loved to sing with the various choirs and groups at the Cedar Lake Campus.
Charlotte Evans is survived by her husband Stephen of West Bend; daughters; Martha Evans of Menomonee Falls; Susan (Charles) Schneider of Traverse City, MI; and Sarah (Michael Brown) Roberts of Germantown; grandchildren; Carlie (John) Lesley of Omaha, NE; Danielle (Michael) Spevak of Omaha, NE; and Stephen of Traverse City, MI; sisters Joyce (Henry) Schurr of New York; and Nancy Pogmore of Connecticut. She is further survived by five great grandchildren, other relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held on Friday May 23, 2014, 2:00 p.m. Pilgrim United Church of Christ 1621 2nd Ave Grafton, Wisconsin. Condolences may be sent to Reverend Stephen Evans, 125 Cedar Ridge Drive, Apt. S-340, West Bend, WI. The family requests that any gifts in Charlotte’s honor be sent to: Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Memorial Fund, 1621 2nd Avenue, Grafton, WI 53024.
