Have you ever thought about how safe we are at night when we sleep in our homes? Or what a safe and protected environment our children play in? In the past 6 months at Mungeli we have had 28 patients with snake bites and another 22 patients with scorpion stings. Most of these patients are young children.
As the density of the population increases and these wild creatures have no place to go, they then find themselves hiding in places where people are in close proximity. The children are either stung or bit at home in the night or in places where they play.
In our early days in Mungeli, we would commonly loose many such patients as they would come to us too late. The hospital here was hardly functioning and the only real option patients had was to go to the traditional healers. If the bite was not serious they would usually survive; however, many times they would be brought to the hospital very late and nothing could be done.
Through support by One Great Hour of Sharing as well as the provision of good Intensive Care Units with proper availability of anti-snake venom, we are now able to save most of the patients who are brought to us. The change in the area is amazing as people now know they can come and we will be able to get them on the road to health. As we approach the season of Easter, one realizes even more the significance of this as patients who are close to death improve quickly and dramatically when given proper treatment.
One Great Hour of Sharing has been a blessing to tens of thousands of people of this region as they now have access to a hospital with modern facilities at low cost, a English medium school that believes in providing low cost education and provides transport for children living in nearby villeages, and a nursing school which caters to local girls from low-income households.
God has truly blessed this community as it brings new hope and a better tomorrow as we see lives changing every day. Thank you for the support you provide to the people of Mungeli as you give to One Great Hour of Sharing.
