The National Spiritual Council of Churches of Haiti (CONASPEH), made up of 6,000 churches, is an umbrella organization for Protestant churches and associations in the country. Established in 1986, it seeks to be, not only an advocate for its member churches, but also a preacher of the gospel to all peoples everywhere, particularly those in the remote areas of Haiti, sharing Christ’s suffering as well his compassion for those in need. In that connection, CONASPEH, a long-standing partner of Global Ministries, has in place projects aimed at improving the lives of children.
One of CONASPEH’s projects is in the area of formal education. The Collège André includes kindergarteners, elementary school students, and secondary school students. Besides its basic curriculum, the school provides students with the opportunity to take courses in informatics, typing, plastic arts and music, and gives scholarships for the study of medicine and the other sciences at levels of higher education. Since the devastating earthquake in January of 2010, the school has been meeting for classes under large tents on the CONASPEH property. At the present time, construction is underway on a new building to house the school.
An emerging area of CONASPEH’s work with children involves support for orphanages like the Centre d’ Accueal Aux Enfants (Center for the Support of Children). There are at least three other orphanages in the immediate area that CONASPEH supports, all of them related to local CONASPEH member churches. Funds provided by CONASPEH help pay for rent, provide supplies, food, and medical care for the children under the care of these center. The centers work to ensure that school-age children are enrolled in school and have what they need to attend, including uniforms.
