Death of Reverend David Luo, Former Missionary to Thailand
1915-2011
It is with deep sadness that Global Ministries learned of the death of former missionary to Thailand, Reverend David Luo. Reverend Luo passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2011, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was born on December 14, 1915, in Linchuan, China, to Shan-Ming Luo and Yang-Ying Chou Luo. He received his secondary education in Linchuan Senior Middle School and also attended college in Nanjing, China.
Reverend Luo received his B.A. degree from Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas, in 1949; in 1954 he received a B.D. degree from Brite Divinity School, Fort Worth, Texas; and an S.T.M. from Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1969. Reverend Luo was ordained on May 26, 1953, at University Christian Church, Fort Worth, Texas. He also studied at Mercer University, Cornell University, University of Arkansas, and the Hartford Seminary Foundation.
Reverend Luo was sent to Thailand as a Disciple missionary in 1955 where he met and married Mary Hong Varich Angkatavanich in January, 1956. They are the parents of four daughters: Amy Bacarreza, Anna Yeh, Janet Luo, and Irene Seward; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
David Luo served in Thailand for twenty-six years in different capacities such as: pastor of a local church, member of the Seventh District Council, member of the General Council of the Church of Christ in Thailand, member of the Board of Chiang Mai Theological Seminary, member of the Board of Payap College, member of the Board of the Association of Theological Schools in Southeast Asia, and Principal of the Bangkok Institute of Theology until his retirement in 1981.
A memorial service was held on July 30, 2011, at Trinity Christian Church in Fort Worth, Texas. David is survived by his loving wife, Mary.
