First Congregational Church, Cheshire, Connecticut
Each year, the Confirmation Class of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, Connecticut, chooses a mission project that they are passionate about. To choose their project, the 2008 class brainstormed about issues being faced on each continent and discussed how they were being called to make a difference in the world. The issue that rose to the surface was clean water for children in Africa. They read about the water projects on the Global Ministries website settled on raising funds for the School Water Project in Lesotho.
Earlier in the year, Cheshire High School had gone one day without water and bathroom facilities and, having experienced that, the youth couldn’t imagine their access to water being so limited on a daily basis. This helped fuel their excitement and the group raised enough donations in one day to meet their goal and sent over $1,400. The class also provided a fact sheet about the need for water and publicized their project in the local paper and on local radio.
