Death of Marilyn Digweed

The Division of Overseas Ministries/Global Ministries and Disciples Home Missions announce the passing of Marilyn G. Digweed on Saturday, August 22, 2009. 

Marilyn served as a missionary to Nigeria from 1967-1970 and in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) from 1971-1973.  She was a literature consultant with Daystar Press, a publishing company supported by the Christian Council of Nigeria, and was editor of the Zaire Church News, a journal published by the Church of Christ in Zaire for the Protestant churches.  Marilyn returned to the U.S. in 1973 when Zaire’s government prohibited publication of religious printed materials. 

Marilyn then served the church through the Division of Homeland Ministries (now known as Disciples Home Missions) from January 1, 1975, until her retirement on December 31, 1985.  Her duties included:  Corporate Secretary, Director of Editorial Services, Associate Editor of the program journal, Vanguard, as well as editing the Annual Planning Guide and Calendar and the Church Program Guidance Manuals.

Marilyn received a B.A. degree in 1954 from Eureka College, a B.D. degree in 1962 from Lexington Theological Seminary, and later acquired her Masters in Divinity.  She was an active member of Downey Avenue Christian Church and their choir, along with the Robin Run Bell Choir, and volunteered in the Robin Run day care.  She is survived by her two sisters, June Coy (Ken) and Edna Volman (Harry), and several nieces and nephews.  Memorial services were held at Robin Run Retirement on August 25, 2009 and will be held at Downey Avenue Christian Church on Saturday September 5, 2009 with visitation at 2:00 p.m. and services at 3:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to:  Bread for the World, 50 “F” Street NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20001.  Condolences may be sent to:  Mrs. Edna Volman, 17556 Woodbrook Lane, Lockport, Illinois 60441 and to Mrs. June Coy, 2109 Thistlewood Drive, Columbus Ohio 43235.
