Pakistan’s Displaced Population Grows

Global Ministries is working with local partners through Church World Service and Action by Churches Together (ACT) International to provide relief for displaced persons. Initial gifts have been sent through UCC’s One Great Hour of Sharing and Disciples Week of Compassion to provide food relief, shelter kits, cooking utensils, blankets, water, hygiene and healthcare.The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) report 1.17 million newly displaced refugees due to fighting in the North West Frontier Province and Federal Administered Tribal areas of Pakistan.
Most severely impacted by the conflict are children who are suffering from stress associated with trauma. The children have witnessed violence and experienced displacement, an interruption in education, and are left with little or no access to healthcare.
Although more than a million people are in transition, only 130,000 are staying in the camps set-up for Internally Displaced Person (IDPs), while others are staying with relatives and friends in host communities. Unfortunately, the weakened infrastructure of the communities simply can not accommodate the additional stress to the economy, and is struggling to provide safe drinking water, clothing, flood, shelter, healthcare, sanitation and hygiene.
Emergency appeals have been set up by One Great Hour of Sharing and Week of Compassion to provide immediate and long-term relief. Your support will help support 2,000 women with children families and 2,000 IDP families.
