World Refugee Day – June 20, 2009
The Refugee & Immigration Ministries programs of both the UCC and the Disciples encourage congregations to recognize World Refugee Day on or around June 20. Church World Service provides a worship resource appropriate for use as a bulletin insert. “Real People, Real Needs” is the theme provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Even in the midst of an economic recession it is important to share what we have with others. The scripture selected considers the example of the widow in Zarephath (I Kings 17) and how she shared her food with Elijah during a famine and how God rewarded her for her faithfulness.
