Lesotho Evangelical Church Will Celebrate Its 175th Anniversary

The Lesotho Evangelical Church (LEC) will celebrate its 175th anniversary on the 25th and 26th October, 2008, at Thaba-Bosiu (about 30km east of the Capital, Maseru) and at Morija (40km south of Maseru), respectively.  Thaba-Bosiu and Morija have been assigned to host this important event because of the significant role they both played in the days when the first seeds of Christianity were sown on Basutoland soil, back in 1833.

Thaba-Bosiu became the cradle of the Basotho nation, a natural fortress, on whose flat top, King Moshoeshoe, the founder of the nation enjoyed perfect protection of his young nation against the marauding tribes of the 19th Century.  This mountain is still honoured as the place where the revelation of peace, that would later sustain the nation and secure its independence, was born.  This is the place where the first Christian missionaries (protestant) were hosted and from there, established mission stations in the country.

Morija is the mother of all mission stations, the home of all LEC converts.  This is where the first church was started in 1833.  This long-awaited event is indeed a milestone, not only for the historic account it commemorates, but also because very significant achievements will be acknowledged and recognized, all of which gave the LEC its present picture.  This event will indeed draw participants from local churches, as well as partner churches from Africa and abroad.
