People of color in Global Ministries
“When I think of missionaries, I think of a White man or woman.”
“I’ve never seen a non-White missionary before.”
“When I think of missionaries, I think of a White man or woman.”
“I’ve never seen a non-White missionary before.”
These are some of the comments made by members of Disciples and UCC congregations in the New York City area during their visit last May and June. Mr. Daniel Gourdet, who is Haitian, and Rev. Sandra Gourdet, who is African American, are a missionary husband and wife team who formerly served in Zimbabwe and Haiti. Sandra now serves as the Africa Executive for Global Ministries, while Daniel continues his ministry in Haiti on behalf of Global Ministries. The Gourdet’s have served God in the name of Christ faithfully for the past 30 years. Their visits to US Disciples and UCC congregations help to dispell the misconception that people of color from the U.S. are not involved in God’s mission globally.
