The Asian Human Rights Commission is part of a local coalition – the Hong Kong Campaign for the Advancement of Human Rights and Peace in the Philippines (HKCAHRPP), a fact-finding mission to Central Luzon from July 23 to 28. The participant list has not been finalized, but they hope to have members from the Protestant and Catholic churches, journalists, lawyers, trade unionists, students and Filipino migrant workers as well as a representative from Global Ministries. They will hold a press conference in Manila at the conclusion of the mission and a press conference in Hong Kong when they return. When the mission comes back to Hong Kong, they are also tentatively planning a candlelight vigil, a special Sunday service of prayer for the Philippines and a demonstration at the Philippine consulate. Because there is little media coverage in the US about these killings in the Philippines, they hope to make this a higher profile issue in Hong Kong and to educate Hong Kong’s people about these deaths. In these ways, they hope to add a small amount of pressure on the Philippine government.
