Salem UCC supports the School Water Project in Lesotho
Salem UCC is taking mission and the issue of water very seriously. Their Mission Ministry was brainstorming about doing something different for a special mission project during Lent when they learned that Lesotho was one of the many countries in Africa that has suffered with lack of access to safe, potable water.
Salem UCC is taking mission and the issue of water very seriously. Their Mission Ministry was brainstorming about doing something different for a special mission project during Lent when they learned that Lesotho was one of the many countries in Africa that has suffered with lack of access to safe, potable water.
They challenged the congregation to contemplate their use of water and how clean water is important to their lives and children’s health. They also educated the congregation about Lesotho through the information on the Global Ministries’ web page for the School Water Project and developed a program around this special project. Congregants were given cups to take home and bring back to church with checks, paper money or coins in them for this special project. Their goal was to raise $1500 to help one school. Each week, a bulletin board tracked the amount raised by adding bricks to a well wall with the dollar amount raised. Salem UCC recently forwarded a check for $1350 for the School Water Project and anticipates that the final $150 will be raised soon. What an amazing commitment for a small church of just under 200 members!
Water is essential to life and access to it is the right of every human being, especially children. Salem UCC’s contribution will make a significant difference to the children in the schools supported by Global Ministries’ partner, the Lesotho Evangelical Church. Another missionary recently wrote, “The introduction of a modest water pump (or access to a clean water source) in an African village can transform life. Clean water can foster the empowerment of rural women, who have to walk miles every day to find a well. Clean water can also help to eradicate the waterborne diseases that claim so many of their children’s lives.” By helping to supply safe drinking water to schools, Salem UCC is helping those children stay in school and get the kind of education that will enable them to better their lives and the lives of their communities.
