Support Peace in the Sudan
Ask President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to support the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
Ask President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to support the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
In January 2005, Church World Service joined partners in Sudan to celebrate the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, an event marking the beginning of an end to the senseless loss of life and suffering of the people of Sudan in a 21-year north-south war. (Nevertheless, war continues in the Darfur region of western Sudan.)
With the tragic death of John Garang, chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), on July 31, barely three weeks after he was installed as First Vice-President of Sudan, the future of peace in Sudan is uncertain.
ACTION: Contact President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asking that the U.S. government — which played an important role in the establishment of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) — encourage the Sudanese government and the SPLM/A to remain firm in their commitment to peace and to the CPA.
