Philippines update
Prophets may be killed but the prophetic voice can never be silenced.
The people in the Philippines are living in a time of fear, anxiety and disquiet. Present situation borders upon the memories of the dark years of the country’s history. Realities of grinding poverty, terrible corruption, inequality, and conflict still continue. And the recent series of murder and violence disturb and alarm the people even more. Senseless killings of those who defend the truth and those who work for justice, including church people, undoubtedly point to a situation of suppression, unjustice and unpeace times. The upsurge of deliberate murders and crimes in the Philippines is indeed alarming.
Given all these fear- provoking events, as Christians, and a partner to the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, we should speak out and express our heartfelt concerns. As prophets of God’s people, we need to continually pray for the victims, the church workers of the UCCP and for all the people of the Philippines whose lives are endanger because they are doing God’s work.
