Lalminsum is now a prosperous gardener
Food Security Program
Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh
At thirty-one years old, Lalminsum of Bandarban has become a prosperous gardener. His father, who died a few years ago, was a beneficiary of the Christian Commission for Development in Bangladesh (CCDB). Lalmin became a member of CCDB after his father’s death. He has to maintain a large family of eight members including his brothers and sisters. His wife is a housewife but helps her husband in gardening. His younger brother and sister, who are still in school, also help their eldest brother in gardening.
After being involved with CCDB, he received various species of saplings and seedlings and also some training, especially in horticulture. He purchased five acres of grove land for cultivating pineapples in 1994. He earned $750 in the first year. In 2008 he earned $2,100 from pineapple cultivation.
Cultivation of pineapples is getting popular in this area day by day. Many of the neighbors raise their income by growing pineapples. Lalmin looks forward to a brighter future when he will grow pineapples on a larger scale. He is very serious about his children’s education. His eldest daughter is a kindergarten student at the ‘Home of Blessing School’ at Gazipur near Dhaka.
