Pray with Japan, February 7, 2021
Lectionary Selection: Mark 1:29-39
Prayers for Japan:
In the quiet, in the crowds, in our homes, and in the streets, God you are there. Not only is your presence here, but it is your desire to be close to us. That is why you came.
We lift up our voices alongside the countless others praying over the global pandemic all across the world. Guard our health of body, of mind, and especially our spirit, Lord, that is one with your Spirit.
We pray that you will make a way for the rural leaders of 2021, that they may be able to come to ARI and begin their training as the leaders they were called to be.
We pray for the leaders all over the world, give them wisdom and patience and grace, Lord.
We pray for healing over our beloved ARI staff members, over the health of this community, the health of our loved ones, and the health of those who think no one is praying for them, we are praying for them.
You are the God of love, of light, of healing, and of grace. We know this to be true.
We thank you for your goodness.
In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
Mission Stewardship Moment from Japan:
“It is painful!” he cried, his face that had always smiled now streaked with tears that he tried to dash away.
The ARI community had gathered around the bus that would take our graduates to the airport, and then to their countries, far away from us. As they walked out of the dining hall, bags in hand, they started down a long line of community members, collecting hugs, letters, prayers, and good wishes as they went.
These graduates had spent 9 months of intensive training where they not only learned but also taught us many things. We shared, we learned, we grew together.
One of my favorite camp songs says: “You must give yourself to love/If love is what you’re after/Open up your heart to/The tears and laughter.” Love also comes with pain. To accept and give love means to laugh, but it also means to cry.
These friends of my heart gave their love and dedication, working towards becoming better leaders of their communities.
As my friend put it, it is so very painful to part with loved ones. Throughout this time, and indeed throughout our lives, we face the sweetest love and the most bitter heartache as we say our hellos and goodbyes.
The Lord gave the ultimate sacrifice out of love. It caused him so much pain, but he withheld nothing from us. May we learn to love without borders, without restrictions, with self-preservation, as God loves.
