Pray with Guatemala, January 9, 2022

Lectionary Selection: Luke 3:15-17,21-22

Prayers for Guatemala:

To the one who is more powerful than the evil forces, we pray for the sacred dawn.

May the studies of the realities in the communities that suffer from the environmental war imposed by the economy of dispossession radiate healing force and direct the paths towards peace. (Lc1: 78-79)

May our voice of denunciation resound, and the nations be enlightened. (Luke 2:32)

May we strengthen our ability to confront those who harm and distort rights, so that the holy fire advances the light of Christ and the long, cold, and infertile nights of death end. (Is.60: 1-3)

That we attract the energies from the 4 roads and corners so that with, by and from the youth, the women, the guardian spiritual leaders in Mesoamerica, South America, and the Caribbean, and that the Son of God may manifest among the indigenous peoples, Afro-descendants, and marginalized peasants. who defends creation! (Lk 2: 8-9).

Mission Stewardship Moment from Guatemala:

Allow me to share with you about the Monte Olivo community, defender of the river in Alta Verapaz, where the most powerful cleansed and burned the impiety with fire.

The municipality, without consulting the residents, brought machinery to the river and began to install the Santa Rita hydroelectric plant.
The community expelled the hydroelectric plant from its territory.
The state installed a military detachment in the community.
The community expelled him.
A hit man came to kill the community leader, David Güítz, and when he could not find him, in a rage, he murdered 13-year-old Haggai Isaac Güítz Maas and 11-year-old David Estuardo.
A public official offered water tanks to store water. The community responded: why do we want water tanks, if we have the river?
He offered bribes, a sum that, in the face of their refusal, tripled. The leaders were not sold.
A thousand policemen forced the eviction of the community. The community took refuge in the mountains.
The community established a checkpoint with shifts 24/7.
On November 8, 2013, at the checkpoint, the State security forces fired 4 shots in the back at Carlos Güítz. Carlos was left paraplegic with lung and kidney problems and died on December 12, 2017.
The community reported the hydroelectric plant to the offices of the World Bank, and this entity withdrew its financing, and the project was canceled.

The Spirit descended, heaven was opened, and the Son of God was manifested. The hydroelectric plant was stopped, however, powerful families, wanting to muddy life in the area, impose hydroelectric projects on other river slopes and monocultures of coffee and oil palm.

Al que es más poderosos que las fuerzas malignas suplicamos por el amanecer lo sagrado.

Permítanme compartirles de la comunidad Monte Olivo, defensora del río, en Alta Verapaz, en donde el más poderoso limpió y quemó con fuego la impiedad.

La municipalidad, sin consultar a los residentes, metió maquinaria hasta el río y comenzó a instalar la hidroeléctrica Santa Rita.
La comunidad expulsó a la hidroeléctrica de su territorio.
El estado instaló un destacamento militar en la comunidad.
La comunidad lo expulsó.
Un sicario llegó a matar al dirigente comunitario, David Güítz, y al no encontrarlo, rabioso, asesinó Hageo Isaac Güítz Maas de 13 años y a David Estuardo de 11.
Una funcionaria pública ofreció tinacos para almacenar agua. La comunidad le respondió: ¿para qué queremos tinacos, si tenemos el río?
Ofreció sobornos, suma que, ante la negativa de ellos, triplicó. Los dirigentes no se vendieron.
Mil policías forzaron el desalojo de la comunidad. La comunidad se refugió en la montaña.
La comunidad estableció un puesto de control con turnos 24/7.
El 8 de noviembre 2013, en el puesto de control, la fuerza pública del Estado disparó 4 balazos en la espalda contra Carlos Güítz. Carlos quedó parapléjico con problemas pulmonares y renales y murió el 12 de diciembre de 2017.
La comunidad denunció a la hidroeléctrica ante las oficinas del Banco Mundial, y esta entidad retiró su financiamiento y se canceló el proyecto.

Descendió el Espíritu, se abrió el cielo y se manifestó el Hijo de Dios. Se detuvo la hidroeléctrica, no obstante, las familias poderosas, queriendo enturbiar la vida en la zona, imponen proyectos hidroeléctricos en otras vertientes de río y monocultivos de café y palma aceitera.
