Prayer Alert for Peace in Africa – February 2022

Dear siblings in the ecumenical family,

Ecumenical greetings from the All Africa Conference of Churches. The All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) is asking for your prayers for God’s intervention to bring peace in the following situations:

Guinea-Bissau: A coup d’état was attempted in Guinea-Bissau on 1 February 2022. Please pray for calm, security and peace in Guinea-Bissau.

Mali: Mali continues to face internal tensions and external pressures from sanctions by ECOWAS and other countries. Please pray for the stability, normalization of life and return to constitutional order in Mali, and that Mali’s leaders will have wisdom in this transition period.

Burkina Faso: The deteriorating security situation and governance deficits culminated in a coup by the military on January 23, 2022. Pray for the country and those who are affected by these disturbances that the different parties would engage in dialogue in order to quickly return to constitutional order.

Kenya: As Kenya prepares for general elections in August 2022, tensions are rising throughout the country, reminding people of the violence and difficulties in past elections. Pray for security, that the candidates would seek God’s guidance during the campaign period.

Libya: The election that was planned for December 24, 2021 was postponed; the current plan is to conduct the general elections in June 2022. Pray for a successful transition and election so that the major actors will respect the outcome.

Natural Disasters in Southern Africa: Due to the 2021/2022 cyclone season, Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe all faced damage and destruction from heavy rainfall and flooding. It is expected that six tropical cyclones will hit before the rainy season ends in March. Please pray for God’s protection and for rescue workers and authorities who are bringing humanitarian and emergency response.

Eastern DRC: Armed groups continue to proliferate, causing fear and despair among populations in Eastern DRC. Pray for Congolese authorities to have wisdom and resources to provide protection of civilians and take concrete steps to address the drivers of conflict in the East of the country.

Improved relations between Rwanda-Uganda and Rwanda-Burundi: We praise God Rwanda re-opened a border crossing to Uganda that was closed nearly three years ago. Similarly, we thank God that most of the contentious issues between Rwanda and Burundi appear to be getting solutions. Please pray that God would grant wisdom to the top leaders of the three countries, and that official acts of rapprochement may be sealed soon.
