Prayers for Mexico

As we look at the psalmist’s prayer (Ps. 133), we see how good and pleasant it is to be united in prayer because there, God sends his blessing and fullness of life. Paul exhorts the Christian community of Thessalonica not to be carried away by “false teachings” that seek to alarm and discourage the community. He invites us to stand firm in the faith and hope of the glorious arrival of the Lord. Meanwhile, every good deed and word must be affirmed.

We live in challenging times that make us easy prey to doubt and fear. Faced with the “bad news” that reaches us daily, there is no shortage of those who sound the trumpet of the “end of times.” That is why we need to affirm our unity as a church in constructing the Kingdom of God, praying, and working for another world to be possible. The purpose of the Second Epistle to the Thessalonians is to affirm the Christian commitment here and now, with the definitive arrival of the glorious Lord’s day as its horizon.

United and in harmony, we want to dedicate this time of prayer, reflection, and action to remember women who have suffered and are suffering all kinds of violence. Gender violence in Mexico is terrible news that upsets and discourages us. Yet it also motivates us and commits us to our Christian faith. We cannot and do not want to normalize violence. If we wish to, we can pray and act to transform this reality of death.

Mission Stewardship Moment from Mexico

In recent years, Mexico has experienced increasing violence against women. According to the latest census from 2016 by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), 66 out of 100 women have suffered physical, psychological, or sexual assault. Of these women, only 9.45% filed a complaint with the authorities. The United Nations (UN) considers gender-based violence a “pandemic.” The UN classifies Mexico among the 20 worst countries for violence against women, making Mexico and Central America the most violent region in the world for women outside of a war zone.

In May, unprecedented violence against women was recorded. According to feminist groups and organizations, an average of 76 women were raped, and 11.5 women were murdered every 24 hours in May 2022. Between January and May of this year, 1,122 women were victims of intentional homicide and another 385 of femicide, adding up to 1,507 women victims of a sexist and violent system. 95% of these crimes go unpunished.

Faced with this alarming situation, many churches and social and religious organizations are working to raise awareness and promote a culture of non-violence. Many programs and initiatives seek to prevent the different manifestations of gender violence, creating spaces for protecting and restoring victims’ rights. The Theological Community of Mexico works toward gender equality and women’s human rights. In particular, the Theological Community of Mexico offers programs for study, research, and action on critical issues of gender and non-violence. The Diploma in Gender and Master’s programs in Critical Gender Studies contributes significantly to forming a new socio-ecclesial leadership.

Within the framework of these initiatives, spaces and networks are being created for reflection, prayer, and action. We are aware that the situation of violence faced by women in our region will not be solved only with good intentions. As the famous Latin American song says, “no basta con rezar” (“praying is not enough“). Therefore the invitation is that we can accompany women victims of violence with our prayers and actions. We join in prayer and action that:

Churches raise their prophetic voice and influence the reform and creation of laws and policies that guarantee the human rights of women and gender equality.
Churches and their organizations ensure gender equity within their spaces and structures, thus being an example of testimony to society.
Churches join efforts with organizations that work toward preventing violence and protecting the rights of women who suffer violence.

May the God of Hagar hear and see the suffering of women who are violated. Like Hagar, may they feel seen and heard by God. May the church be one of God’s instruments to accompany them in their struggles for justice and restitution of their rights. Amen.

Retomando la oración del salmista (Sal. 133), que bueno y agradable es que podamos estar juntos y unidos en oración, porque allí Dios envía su bendición y vida plena. Pablo exhorta a la comunidad cristiana de Tesalónica, a no dejarse llevar por “falsas enseñanzas” que buscan alarmar y desanimar a la comunidad. Les invita a mantenerse firmes en la fe y esperanza de la gloriosa llegada del Señor, mientras tanto hay que afirmar toda buena obra y palabra.

Indudablemente vivimos tiempos desafiantes que nos hacen presa fácil de la duda y el temor. Ante las “malas noticias” que nos llegan cotidianamente, no faltan quienes hacen sonar la trompeta del fin de los tiempos. Es por eso, que necesitamos afirmar nuestra unidad como iglesia en la construcción del Reino de Dios; orando y trabajando para que otro mundo sea posible. La segunda epístola a los Tesalonicenses tiene como propósito afirmar el compromiso cristiana aquí y ahora, teniendo como horizonte la llegada definitiva del día glorioso del Señor.

Unidos y en armonía queremos dedicar este tiempo de oración, reflexión y acción para recordar a las mujeres que han sufrido y están sufriendo todo tipo de violencia. La violencia de género en México es una de esas malas noticias que nos alteran y desaniman; pero también nos indigna y compromete desde nuestra fe cristiana. No podemos ni queremos normalizar la violencia. Si queremos y podemos orar y actuar para transformar esta realidad de muerte.

En los últimos años México ha experimentado un agravamiento en los temas de violencia ejercida hacia las mujeres. De acuerdo con el último censo realizado en 2016 por el Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Geografía (INEGI), 66 de cada 100 mujeres han sufrido algún tipo de agresión física, psicológica o sexual. De estas mujeres solo el 9.45 % realizan una denuncia ante las autoridades. Por su parte la Organización de las Naciones Unidas (ONU) considera la violencia de género una “pandemia” y clasifica al país entre los 20 más violentos contra las mujeres, convirtiendo a México y Centroamérica en la región del mundo más violenta para las mujeres fuera de una zona en conflicto bélico.

En mayo de este año se registró una violencia sin precedentes contra las mujeres. De acuerdo con grupos y organizaciones feministas, en promedio, cada día de mayo 76 mujeres fueron violadas y 11.5 mujeres fueron asesinadas cada 24 horas. Entre enero y mayo de este año, 1,122 mujeres fueron víctimas de homicidio doloso y otras 385 de feminicidio, sumando 1,507 mujeres victimas de un sistema machista y violento que no da tregua. La otra situación lamentable es la falta de justicia, ya que el 95% de estos crímenes quedan en la impunidad.

Ante este panorama tan alarmante, muchas iglesias y organizaciones sociales y religiosas están trabajando para crear conciencia en la población y promover una cultura de no – violencia. Existen muchos programas e iniciativas que buscan prevenir las distintas manifestaciones de la violencia de género, creando espacios de protección y restitución de los derechos de las víctimas. En este sentido, la Comunidad Teológica de México trabaja de manera transversal el eje temático de igualdad de género y derechos humanos de las mujeres. Particularmente, la Comunidad Teológica de México tiene en su oferta académica dos programas para el estudio, la investigación y la acción en temas críticos de género y la no – violencia. Los programas de Diplomado en Género y la Maestría en Estudios Críticos de Género aportan significativamente en la formación de un nuevo liderazgo socio – eclesial.

En el marco de estas iniciativas se van generando espacios y redes para la reflexión, la oración y la acción. Estamos conscientes que la situación de violencia que enfrentan las mujeres en nuestra región no se solucionará únicamente con buenas intenciones, o como dice la popular canción “no basta con rezar”. Por ello la invitación es que podamos acompañar a las mujeres victimas de violencia con nuestras oraciones y acciones. Nos unimos en oración y acción para:

Que las iglesias levanten su voz profética e incidan en la reforma y creación de leyes y políticas que garanticen los derechos humanos de las mujeres y la equidad de género.

Que las iglesias y sus organizaciones velen por la equidad de género dentro de sus espacios y estructuras, siendo así un ejemplo de testimonio ante la sociedad.

Que las iglesias sumen esfuerzos con las organizaciones que trabajan en la prevención, protección y restitución de los derechos de las mujeres que sufren violencia.

Que el Dios de Agar escuche y vea el sufrimiento de las mujeres que son violentadas. Que al igual que Agar ellas se sientan vistas y escuchadas por Dios. Que la iglesia pueda ser uno de los instrumentos que Dios utilice para acompañarlas en sus luchas por justicia y restitución de sus derechos. Amén.
