Global Ministries Names Dr. Kahala Cannon as Global Relations Minister, Africa
Global Ministries is glad to announce that Dr. Kahala Cannon is now serving as the Global Relations Minister, Africa (formerly known as Area Executive). Previously, Dr. Cannon served as Acting Area Executive for Africa.
In this position, Dr. Cannon serves as the major link to churches, ecumenical organizations, communities, and other partners in the region. Further, she provides pastoral care to and supervision of mission co-workers assigned to the region. She also directs the education and advocacy efforts on issues related to the region.
Before starting as Acting Area Executive, Dr. Cannon served as a Mission Co-worker assigned to serve with the Council of Swaziland Churches (CSC) in Eswatini. Her responsibilities included serving within the CSC Women’s Wing, CSC Justice Peace and Reconciliation Department, and the country’s Faith and Community Initiative with an emphasis on gender-based issues. She also worked with colleagues on strategic planning and execution of programs and initiatives. Before that, she served as a Mission Co-worker in India and South Korea where she provided service and witness to the Church’s mission of love, inclusion, peace justice, and human rights to all in the diaspora of India and South Korea.
Prior to her calling to serve with Global Ministries, Dr. Cannon served as Lead Dentist and practiced General Dentistry with Christ Community Health Services, a Christian, federally qualified health center in Memphis, TN. There, she carried out the mission of Christ Community Health Services of addressing both the physical and spiritual health of the patient population in which they serve. She served within multiple clinical sites and was an on-site Clinical Instructor for Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residents with the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry in Memphis, TN.
Dr. Cannon received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry where she was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society. She subsequently completed a General Practice Residency in Dentistry at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital where she was appointed as a Chief Resident. Her tenure of practice has included private practice and community health. Prior to dental school, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.
Dr. Cannon is a member of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where she has served as a member of the Diaconate and Global Missions Ministries, as a Disciples Bible Study Coordinator and Facilitator, and participant in numerous ministries.
Dr. Cannon is originally from Nashville, TN and has been a resident of Memphis and Cordova, TN for many years. She loves to volunteer her time with her church, community, and city to affect meaningful change in the city of Memphis and surrounding areas. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and volunteers with the Memphis Office of Youth Services (MOYS) and Mobile Food Pantry. She has also served with Memphis Urban League Young Professionals, National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP), Constance Abbey, and Community V.O.I.C.E. 38105.
