Global Ministries supports continuing funding to UNRWA in letter to Pres. Biden
With civilians and children in Gaza at grave risk of starvation and disease, Global Ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and United Church of Christ joined more than 50 national organizations in a letter to President Biden urging him to restore direly needed humanitarian funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). UNRWA serves more than 5.9 million Palestinian refugees in the Middle East. The US recently suspended funding to the agency, along with fifteen other countries, due to allegations that 12 UNRWA staff participated in the Oct. 7 attacks on Israelis, despite scant evidence.
In the letter, the signatories wrote, “Continuing to suspend assistance to UNRWA for the alleged actions of individuals that UNRWA itself condemns and has pledged to help investigate is not only unjust, but detrimental to your administration’s goal of ending the current humanitarian crisis. Denying resources to UNRWA will only deepen the deprivation faced by civilians in Gaza, helping to spread rather than fight
starvation and disease.”
