Sabeel Wave of Prayer: Week of Nov. 28, 2024

Sabeel Wave of Prayer: Week of Nov. 28, 2024

Last week, the United States vetoed yet another U.N. Security Council resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza and release of all hostages, being the only member of the 15-member council to do so. After the presidential elections, the Biden administration continues to provide full cover for Israel, including lobbying Congress to vote against a resolution that would block arms sales to Israel.

God of Justice, we cry out against the powers and principalities that profit from oppression and favor continued suffering over a just peace for all. Holy God, liberate the hearts of those who veto peace and fill them with your light of truth and justice. Kindle the courage of nations to rise against complicity and demand an end to the slaughter of the innocent. May the Holy Spirit breathe new life into those who seek justice, breaking the chains of militarism and unyielding power.

Last week, at least 66 Palestinians were killed and many others injured from an Israeli strike targeting a residential neighborhood near Kamal Adwan Hospital in north Gaza. North Gaza has been under heavy Israeli targeting and little to no humanitarian aid for more than a month now, severely worsening living conditions in the area.

God of Mercy, we have no words to convey our despair over the ongoing massacres and violence occurring. Lord, hear the cries of your children in Gaza, trapped in darkness without relief. We ask for your intervention against the destruction of homes and lives, against the silence of those who witness and do not act. Strengthen the hands that deliver aid, the voices that speak truth, and the hearts that hold onto hope. Teach us to love in action and to dismantle the systems that perpetuate this endless night.

Last week, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant. The court also issued a warrant for the Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif. The official issuing of the arrest warrants came after a request was submitted in May 2024 by Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

God of Accountability, in our gratitude for those who seek justice against the high and mighty, we remember the words of the Psalmist: “The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.” (Psalms 33:5) We know the road to justice is long, but we pray that the issuance of these warrants will be the first fruit of a harvest of righteousness and a step towards realizing your kingdom. Guide the steps of those pursuing truth, and strip away the excuses of those who shield wrongdoers. May impunity find no sanctuary and may your reign of justice and mercy draw near. At every step, guide us to be faithful agents of your will.

Last week, the United Nations Spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric, highlighted the dire impact of the ongoing violence in the occupied West Bank on Palestinian children. The report revealed a troubling statistic that three children are being killed in the West Bank every week.

God of the innocent, we are grieved by the death of every child caught in the evil of occupation and injustice. May your mercy flow over this Holy Land, softening hearts and guiding all toward justice. Bring comfort to grieving families, courage to those working for peace, and an end to all forms of oppression. Watch over every child, Lord, for they are your precious creations. Let your light shine in the darkness and bring peace to every corner of the earth.

Last week, Sabeel hosted its international solidarity pilgrimage. Participants from the pilgrimage traveled throughout Palestine and Israel visiting communities under duress and participated in advocacy.

God of Love, bless these pilgrims for their courage to see, to listen, and to advocate for justice and peace. Strengthen them as they return to their homes, that they may be voices of truth and bearers of hope in their own communities.  May your spirit of justice and love continue to inspire solidarity and bring comfort to the weary.
