Augusta Victoria Hospital has reached a new milestone in its achievement of accreditation from the Joint Commission International.

The Joint Commission International (JCI) is the international branch of the Joint Commission, a non-profit, non-governmental organization, and the most prominent health care accreditor in the United States. With the help of international committees comprised of physicians nurses, healthcare administrators, and public policy experts, among others, the JCI has developed a set of international healthcare regulations and standards of practice for healthcare facilities and professionals that must be met, and continually upheld, in order to receive accreditation.

JCI now works in over 90 countries worldwide, and AVH has become the first Palestinian institution with multiple specialties and one of 500 health organizations worldwide to hold accreditation. Dr. Tawfiq Nasser, CEO of the hospital, emphasized that this is only the beginning of the path towards further achievements at such a high level and that the hospital will continue to develop its services.

Dr. Nasser said that this international recognition is not only a victory for Palestine and Jerusalem, and for all of the healthcare workers throughout Palestine, it is a vivid example of the ability of the Palestinian health sector to keep up with international standards.

This recognition and license comes after several years of intensive preparation by hospital staff. The JCI standards focus primarily on the safety of the patients, medical care, the safety of buildings and facilities, patients’ rights, and administrative competency.

Dr. Nasser praised the tremendous effort led by the hospital staff, administrators, nurses, doctors, support staff and others. He stressed that the success of this accreditation process stem from the belief of the hospital administration and staff in the right of the Palestinian patient to get the best possible healthcare services, and that all hospital staff worked hand-in-hand to achieve this goal.
