Bolenge Hospital Reconstruction Report

Bolenge Hospital Reconstruction Report

Community of Disciples of Christ of the Congo
Bolenge, Democratic Republic of Congo

On June 13, 2006, a devastating electrical fire completely destroyed the main, newer building at Bolenge Hospital, Democratic Republic of Congo. The hospital, built in 1928 by the Community of Disciples of Christ in the Congo (CDCC), expanded over the years to become the supervisor of other health centers in the area. It serves, both directly and indirectly, over 300,000 Bolenge community members.

Although some services have resumed in the older hospital buildings since the fire, the healthcare needs of the Bolenge community are vastly greater than what these older, less-modernized buildings can provide. Consequently, a proposal has been presented for the reconstruction of the burned hospital building and for the modernization of the older buildings. The newly-constructed building will have a 150-bed capacity and will allow Bolenge Hospital to retain its current employees while covering the health needs of the community. The reconstruction is projected to take roughly three years to complete with financial aid coming from several different partners, both local and abroad, and regular construction evaluations made two or three times each year.

The total cost of reconstruction, as estimated by the architect, is US $2,345,245. The costs are divided as follows:

The new, modernized hospital is expected to positively reinforce the presence and image of the church in the Bolenge area as well as essentially benefit the health of those in need. Global Ministries’ hope is that Disciples and UCC members in the United States and Canada will not see the fire at Bolenge Hospital only as a setback, but also as an opportunity to be a Critical Presence in a country that continues to witness to God’s mission through their resilience and faithfulness.

Contributions to the rebuilding of Bolenge Hospital may be directed to Global Ministries at any time.
