Camp Kaleo and the Congo Initiative
Kamp Kaleo is the camp in Nebraska that is jointly owned by the DoC and the UCC. This camp sits along the beautiful spring fed North Loup River in the Sandhills of Nebraska. For every camper that comes there, water is a big deal! To be able to enjoy the coolness of floating in the river on a hot summer day is bliss! Camps run from the last week in May through the last full week of July

Each year a mission project is chosen for every camper and counselor to which they can donate. Last year was the Team Jack Foundation, right here in Nebraska, to help raise funds for Pediatric Brain Cancer research and cures. This year we adopted the Congo Initiative in conjunction with what our Global Ministries is doing. With two more camps to go this season, we have already passed the $3,000.00 mark! Our Camp Administrator, David Ridings, along with the Directors and Counselors of each camp, are willing participants in a whole lot of “challenges” to raise money throughout the summer. Because water is near and dear to all of us at Kaleo, we are designating the money raised to go towards digging wells and getting fresh water for our brothers and sisters in the Congo.
At the recent Quadrennial Assembly, two young campers who participated in this effort came by the Global Ministries booth to share their story. We are very glad they took the initiative and we hope their wonderful work will inspire other camps and churches within the Disciples of Christ and United Church of Christ to also get involved!
