CCD and CTEH Release Statement on the Situation in Honduras

We are concerned about the political crisis in our country which has brought along the destruction of constitutional rights that violate the Inter-American Democratic Letter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The coup perpetrated on June 28th of this year by the political and military elite has no other qualification than the betrayal of democracy and the Honduran nation that calls for a true participatory democracy.

We express our strong dissatisfaction with the military coup in our country and all the consequences brought about as being virtually isolated from the international community and facing the trade and political embargo by our neighbors of the Central American Integration System (SICA). The damage have been multiple in every way: socially, economically, psychologically and spiritually.

We are at a crucial point in this situation, so as part of the Body of Christ, we pledge to support the people in opposition to the breakdown of the basic principles of the democratic system that among other major issues includes the violation of human rights by oppressive systems.

The most vulnerable population that as church and church related organizations we have accompanied since our institutional creation is the one getting the greatest impact of this crisis which the main actors never imagined since it has reached world repudiation.

Our interest is not tilted in any of the parties of this conflict much less to say that there is an absolute truth, because at this moment it is uncertain. We raise our voices as churches and church related agencies, engaged in establishing the Kingdom of God on this Earth and do not endorse the position taken by some church leaders who by defending the constitutional principles, neglected the most important issue from their position: the Gospel of Jesus Christ that calls us to live in justice, love and to accompany our people.

The situation tends to deteriorate more and more. Little evidence of an early solution to this conflict can be seen. We fear that there could be more deaths and that we could loose the little security that still exists. We are outraged to think that hatred is gaining ground dragging us along for not wanting to reflect on time. We firmly believe that the God of Life, who acknowledges us all no matter our differences, DO NOT approve us destroying each other.

We agree on the dialogue between the parties to resolve this conflict, but we urge that results are provided as soon as possible. It has been proved that prolonging a response only irritates the morale and performance of individuals. We encourage strengthening ecumenical ties between church and to identify and develop joint strategies to better support our people.

Today more than ever, as church and church related agencies, we are committed to creating critical and proactive consciousness in the population so they play a protagonist role in the development of our country. We consider absolutely important the study and correct interpretation of the Bible, as we can find many answers to the situation we live in and how we should proceed. It is no longer time to think that we should be subject to an oppressive system; God teaches us that we are Royal Priesthood, that is to say, subjects that impel change.

Pronunciamiento ante la crisis política de Honduras

Estamos preocupados/as por la crisis política en nuestro país que ha traído consigo la destrucción de los derechos constitucionales que violan la Carta Democrática Interamericana y la Declaración Universal de los derechos Humanos. El Golpe de Estado perpetrado el pasado 28 de Junio del presente año, por la elite política y militar no tiene otro calificativo que el de traición a la democracia y a la nación hondureña, que clama por una verdadera democracia participativa.

Expresamos enérgicamente nuestro descontento ante el Golpe de Estado militar en nuestro país y todas las consecuencias que ha traído consigo como el hecho de estar prácticamente aislados de la comunidad internacional y enfrentando el bloqueo comercial y político por nuestros vecinos del Sistema de Integración Centroamericana (SICA). Los daños han sido múltiples en todo sentido: social, económico, psicológico y espiritual.

Estamos en un punto crucial de esta situación, por lo que -como parte del Cuerpo de Cristo- nos comprometemos a acompañar al pueblo en el rechazo a la ruptura de los principios básicos del sistema democrático, que entre otros aspectos importantes incluye la violación a los derechos humanos por medio de sistemas de opresión.

La población más vulnerable a la que, como iglesias y organismos relacionados con iglesias, hemos acompañado desde nuestra creación institucional, es sobre la que impacta con más fuerza esta crisis, cuyo alcance jamás imaginaron sus protagonistas pues ha alcanzado el repudio mundial por primera reflejado de forma tan unánime.

Nuestro interés no está inclinado en cualquiera de las partes en conflicto mucho menos decir que existe una verdad absoluta, ya que ésta es incierta en este momento. Levantamos la voz como iglesias y organismos relacionados con iglesias, comprometidos en el establecimiento del Reino de Dios en esta tierra y no avalamos la posición que adoptaron algunos líderes eclesiásticos que creyendo estar en la defensa de los principios constitucionales, descuidaron lo más importante desde sus posiciones: el Evangelio de Jesucristo que nos insta a vivir en justicia, amor y a acompañar a nuestro pueblo.

La situación tiende a empeorar cada vez más. Se vislumbran pocos indicios de una pronta solución ante este conflicto. Nos indigna pensar que el odio esté ganando terreno y nos arrastre consigo por no querer reflexionar a tiempo. Tememos que sigan registrándose más muertes y se pierda la poca seguridad que existe. Creemos firmemente que el Dios de la vida, quien nos reconoce a todos y todas, independientemente de nuestras diferencias, NO aprueba que nos destruyamos mutuamente.

Estamos de acuerdo con el dialogo entre las partes para resolver este conflicto, pero instamos a que los resultados del mismo se den a la mayor brevedad posible. Está comprobado que prolongar una respuesta sólo exacerba cada día más el ánimo y la actuación de las personas. Invitamos a fortalecer los lazos de ecumenismo entre las iglesias e identificar y desarrollar estrategias conjuntas para un mejor acompañamiento a nuestro pueblo.

Hoy más que nunca, como iglesias y organismos relacionados con iglesias, estamos comprometidos a crear conciencia crítica y propositiva en la población para que la misma juegue un papel protagónico en el desarrollo de nuestro país. Consideramos sumamente importante el estudio y correcta interpretación de la Biblia, ya que allí podemos encontrar muchas respuestas ante la situación que vivimos y como debemos proceder. Ya no es tiempo de pensar que debemos estar sujetos a un sistema opresor, Dios nos enseña que somos Real Sacerdocio, es decir, sujetos que impulsan el cambio.
