Christian Hospital Mungeli (CHM) is located in a rural part of Chhattisgarh, one of the least developed states of India. As a mission hospital, CHM is committed to providing medical care to all patients regardless of their socioeconomic status. While Global Ministries partners with CHM in many ways, CHM also has relationships with other organizations. One of these is Global Links, which provides CHM with sutures, and these sutures play a critical role in allowing CHM to serve its marginalized patients.
Meet just one of the patients whose life and wellbeing would not be the same without CHM and Global Links. Chandkali Sahu is a 37 year old mother of three. She was a farmer’s wife and was working with her family’s bull when it became startled and gored her, injuring her perineum, and leaving her fecal incontinent from an injured anal sphincter. Over the following year, Chandkali and her family went to numerous private hospitals in the area seeking care for her incontinence. However, they were sent from doctor to doctor and given temporary solutions. This forced Chandkali’s family to sell its farm and left them in financial ruin.
Then, with little hope left, Chandkali came to CHM. On her first day at the hospital, her condition was correctly diagnosed and the damage causing her incontinence surgically repaired. After an additional period of healing, Chandkali returned to CHM to complete her treatment by having her colostomy closed. Now, Chandkali is looking forward to rejoining her family’s work after almost a year of staying confined to her home due to the shame associated with her condition.
Chandkali’s treatment at CHM required several surgeries, each of which needed several different kinds of sutures. Without partners such as Global Ministries and Global Links, Chandkali might still be searching for treatment, and her family could be in even greater financial trouble. Chandkali’s family now sells vegetables grown on other people’s farms and is hoping to save enough to purchase land of their own. Now that she is well, Chandkali can help her family work toward that dream.
