Churches are asked to pray for Ukraine
Prayers for peace in Ukraine have been requested by the general secretary of the World Council of Churches
Prayers for peace in Ukraine, and for the success of peace talks now underway in Geneva, Switzerland, have been requested by the Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches (WCC).
“We pray for a political, nonviolent solution to the crisis, and for the reconciliation of brothers and sisters in and around Ukraine,” Tveit said.
In calling on churches worldwide to join in prayer, Tveit observed that “Ukraine and its neighbouring lands are in a region of rich Christian traditions. Churches of both the east and west join this weekend in the celebration of Easter, a festival of forgiveness following acts of violence and hope for the future of all creation.”
Tveit concluded, “We appeal in this common season of Easter for churches to support every sincere effort to resolve conflicts and to establish justice and peace.”
