Congo Delegation Gives Update about the Situation in the Great Lakes Region

A four member delegation from the Church of Christ of Congo (ECC) in the Democratic Republic of Congo gave a lunch presentation at the Disciples Center on April 2nd. To view their PowerPoint presentation click here: Eastern Congo Update
The delegation was made up of the following:
· Mgr. Bulambo Lembelembe, Coordinator of the Church of Christ of Congo Refugee and Combatant Repatriation Program, Bukavu
· Mr. Lungele Serge, Logistics officer, Refugee and Combatant Repatriation Program; Interpreter, Church of Christ of Congo, Bukavu
· Hon. Muhima Sabina, National Deputy Walikali District, North Kivu Province
· Rev. Milenge Mwenelwata, 2nd National Vice-President, Church of Christ of Congo, Kinshasa
The thematic focus of the visit was the conflict in eastern Congo/the Great Lakes region. The inter-related subjects of natural resources, repatriation, land distribution, and sexual violence were highlighted.
The delegation challenged those present to continue working in advocacy here in the U.S. and the United Nations for a peaceful and diplomatic resolution to the on-going conflict. The group shared their vision for a Peace Center in the Eastern Congo region which would work on continual analysis of the conflict and training in peacebuilding. They invited Disciples and UCC to particpate in this capacity building effort through the Global Ministries Africa office.
Julia Brown Karimu, Co-executive of Global Ministries, and Sharon Watkins, General Minister and President of the Disciples, thanked the delegation for their commitment to peace with justice and reaffirmed the commitment of Disciples and UCC to walk with them in their struggle.
