Global Ministries has received word of the passing of former missionary, Rev. George Cherryhomes. Rev. Cherryhomes and his wife, Margaret, were missionaries to China from 1946-1950, and Thailand 1952-1956.
Rev. Cherryhomes was born in Maryland, March 23, 1914, but spent most of his childhood years in Texas. He obtained a B.A. degree from Brite Divinity School of Texas Christian University in 1939 and a B.D. degree from Yale in 1942. George chose China as his field of service and went to Berkeley, CA., for language study. While there, Rev. Cherryhomes served for a time as interim pastor of the University Christian Church. In 1945, he married Margaret Kennedy and they began their missionary life the following year in China, serving for four climactic years of revolution. Later, they pioneered and shared in building a school in a new district in Thailand.
Throughout his lifetime, Rev. Cherryhomes showed an interest in languages and people from other cultures. He was, for many, a pastor, a counselor, a mentor, and a teacher, with a focus on elements which make for sustainable community and mutuality among the diverse peoples of the world.
A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, May 3, 2:00 p.m. at Central Christian Church in Denver, CO. George was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and is survived by his sons, Chris, Daniel, Ben, Paul, and Robert. Messages of condolence may be sent to Robert Cherryhomes at P O Box 1014, Conifer, CO 80433. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of George and Margaret to: Central Christian Church, 3690 Cherry Creek South Drive, Denver, CO 80209; or the Division of Overseas Ministries/Global Ministries, P. O. Box 1986, Indianapolis, IN., 46206-1986.
