Ensuring that No Kid Goes Unnoticed
Henry Brewer-Calvert is a Global Mission Intern serving in the Dominican Republic. His appointment is supported by Week of Compassion.
Week of Compassion is a dynamic force in our world for good. I’d like to thank you for your generous donations to Week of Compassion on behalf of my appointment as a Global Ministries Intern. There are no words with which I can truly express my gratitude for the opportunity Global Ministries has given me. Here at Caminante, I support kids and adolescents in this impoverished area by walking amongst them, playing with them, and designing and operating programming in conjunction with the staff of Caminante Education Project. Caminante offers after-school programs for kids age eight to eighteen, adult vocational training, and consults with Dominican Government officials to ensure that child workers are protected from drugs and prostitution. It is heavy but rewarding work indeed!
February marks my sixth month in the Dominican Republic and I am still learning more and more every day! At this stage in my internship here, I am learning about all the activities that already exist and fitting myself where I am the most helpful. For example, I am currently teaching English to the kids here at Caminante so that they may be better citizens of the wider world. I am also counseling and working with several youth that are living on the street. This manifests itself in me looking out for them on the street, feeding them when they are hungry and sharing lessons that I have learned along the way. Of course, for every lesson that I share, tenfold are given to me from the kids!
This is my friend Yancy. Yancy is a Haitian teen who has came to the Dominican Republic before the earthquake. Yancy is in the middle of a challenging period in his life because his mother is undergoing treatments for a tumor and he is unable to attend school for lack of a Dominican ID card. Through all of this, Yancy keeps smiling and dreaming. He is why I love what I do because I get to watch him learn and grow each day.
I am not alone in working overseas, I am but a part of the Global Ministries’ Interns. We operate all around the world doing all kinds of different projects! The Global Ministries Interns and Week of Compassion are working together to ensure that no kid goes unnoticed and left to the mercy of the street. Will you make a difference in this world we all share?
Thank you again for supporting Global Ministries Interns! Please keep us in your prayers as we strive to learn from serving.
Yours in Christ,
Henry Brewer-Calvert
