Global Ministries Celebrates the Ministry of Rev. Dr. Julia Brown Karimu
On Friday, December 10, Global Ministries celebrated the retirement of Julia Brown Karimu. Julia serves as the President of the Division of Overseas Ministries and Co-Executive of Global Ministries. She will retire on December 31, 2021.
Julia has served with general ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for 44 years. She first began her service in the Church in Society (CIS) department of Disciples Home Missions. From there, she transitioned to Mission Personnel Executive of the Division of Overseas Ministries. She also became the Vice President of the Division of Overseas Ministries.
In 1996, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and United Church of Christ established Global Ministries. Julia was there throughout the whole process and was instrumental in building the Global Ministries we know today. She inspired Global Ministries to consider our “critical presence,” a principle that continues to guide Global Ministries in our work.
In 2011, Julia began her work as President of the Division of Overseas Ministries and Co-Executive of Global Ministries. One highlight during her tenure has been the establishment of area initiatives. Since she initially brought the idea, Global Ministries has had the Congo Initiative, the Middle East Initiative, the Caribbean Initiative, and the Southern Asia Initiative.
Global Ministries is grateful for the work and witness of Julia Brown Karimu. The global church is richer because of the gifts and ideas she has shared. Thank you for your ministry, Julia!
An endowment fund was set up in Julia’s honor. Learn more about the Julia Brown Karimu fund.
