Helen Stumpe, former missionary to the Democratic Republic of Congo
Global Ministries is saddened to learn of the death of Helen Delores Stumpe, former missionary to the Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire).

Global Ministries is saddened to learn of the death of Helen Delores Stumpe, 88, of Maryville,Illinois, formerly of Granite City,Illinois. Helen was born November 11, 1923, in Granite City, Illinois.
Helen dedicated her life to service to God and God’s people in many ways. After graduating from Eureka College, she was ordained a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Her ordination took place at Central Christian Church, where she has remained a member. Helen served as a missionary to the Democratic Republic of Congo (former Zaire) for six years as an advisor to the EBB which is equivalent to the Christian Women’s Fellowship (CWF). After her return to the U.S. she served as director of Christian Women’s Fellowship in the states of Iowa and Missouri and worked a few years at the Christian Board of Publication in St. Louis, Missouri.
After retirement Helen tutored at Holy Family School in Granite City, Illinois. She was actively involved in the United Churches of Metro East organization, supporting its ecumenical efforts and many humanitarian projects. As a member of Central Christian Church, Helen served as an Elder, a faithful choir member, a CWF officer, and in many other capacities in the church. She also was an active member and past officer of Church Women United.
Ms. Stumpe last resided at the Cambridge House of Maryville, where she quickly made many close friends. She will be remembered for the many lives she touched through her ministries and her love for the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Stumpe; her parents, Floyd and Florence Gilbert; sister, Mildred Groboski; two brothers, Gerald and William Gilbert; and sister-in-law, Gladys Gilbert.
She is survived by and will be missed by her sister, Mary Jane Wade of Collinsville, Illinois; brother, Arlie (Georgianna) Gilbert of Roanoke, Virginia, and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials to Central Christian Church, 2020 Johnson Rd., Granite City, Ill. 62040, or to United Churches of Metro East (UCM), 1657 5th St., P.O. Box 166, Madison, Ill. 62060.
In celebration of her life a memorial gathering was held on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at Central Christian Church in Granite City, Illinois.
