- With only a few pencils and a large congregation, it’s a challenge to come up with a way to use pencils. We passed them through the pews at the end of the presentation, and then the ushers collected them. During the benediction we held them up for the congregation to see the change and reminded them that we change everything we touch; the more energy we expend, the greater and more long lasting the change. We then sent them out to expend their energy for God’s work and to make lasting changes.
- Compare mission giving to a potluck supper. I’ve heard people say that the church is always asking for something extra for the many missions we are involved in. I suggested, like a potluck dinner, they could pick and choose; some selections appeal more than others. Just as you take small helpings of some things, larger portions of others and avoid some foods altogether, you can choose which mission opportunities you want to fund, being sure someone else will be funding others. Just like a potluck, you can always go back and give again. One woman said that she has supported mission very strongly for many years and feels
guilty when an appeal is made that she doesn’t feel like supporting. She thanked me for giving her permission not to give to everything.
