South African Council of Churches
Dear International Ecumenical Partners and friends of the SACC,
Warm greetings from the SACC, particularly at this time when we reflect on and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ our Saviour. As we give thanks to our Creator, God, we are mindful of the role you played and continue to play in our common mission and faith that “a better world is possible”.
You may recall that one of the many painful experiences that plagued South Africa under apartheid was the poisoning of our former General Secretary Rev Frank Chikane. Today, we are so appreciative for the reconciliation and healing efforts undertaken by leaders of our country. We are also grateful for the grace that has been mercifully endowed on those who managed to survive the atrocities inflicted on peace-loving people of our land.
Please receive attached a copy of the “plea bargain agreement” in the court case involving our brother Frank Chikane. He specifically requested that the SACC share these outcomes with all people who supported us during the very challenging times. You are therefore at liberty to distribute this letter and the plea bargain agreement to anybody that you consider to be informed of this development. We, in fact, appeal that you assist in spreading this information.
The SACC is aware that there are just so many good hearted people who provided selfless support to Frank, both personally and collectively. The poisoning of Rev Chikane was an attack against the SACC and its mission. The SACC therefore joins in promoting services of thanksgiving wherein the lives of people like Frank and the many other survivors of apartheid are celebrated.
Yours truly,
Eddie Makue
General Secretary
