Letter to President Trump on Military Escalation Against Venezuela

Dear President Trump:
Greetings from Global Ministries, a common witness of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada and the United Church of Christ.
Global Ministries has been engaged in a relationship of solidarity and accompaniment with the Evangelical Pentecostal Union of Venezuela for more than 60 years. As such, we have walked alongside Venezuelans throughout various moments in the history of the nation. This past October, we, as leaders of our two denominations, visited Venezuela and saw firsthand the economic hardship caused by economic sanctions.
The people in the U.S. and Venezuela are focused on investing time, attention, and resources to protect their loved ones from COVID-19. We, and our partner in Venezuela, were deeply concerned by the announcement that U.S. Navy ships would be deployed to Venezuela. As we have already stated in previous communications to you on this topic, we are deeply convinced that any U.S. military intervention in Venezuela would exacerbate the current crisis, and this is only amplified in this time of global pandemic.
We strongly urge you to refrain from any military intervention in Venezuela and to heed the call for a global ceasefire from the United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Antonio Guterres, who said: “It is time to put the armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.”
As people of God, we cherish the integrity of every human being and ask you to commit to a peaceful solution to this situation seriously. We pray that the U.S. will not escalate this situation with Venezuela militarily. We call for an end to economic sanctions, which disproportionately harm those who are already suffering most, and that may be most vulnerable to COVID-19. This is the moment to follow a path of sensibility, respect, dialogue, and reconciliation.
May God guide you with wisdom and discernment both for the people of Venezuela and for all of God’s creation.

Saludos de Ministerios Globales, un testimonio común misional de la Iglesia Cristiana (Discípulos de Cristo) en los Estados Unidos y Canadá y la Iglesia Unida de Cristo.
Ministerios Globales ha sostenido una relación de solidaridad y acompañamiento con la Unión Evangélica Pentecostal de Venezuela por más de 60 años. Como tal, hemos caminado junto a los venezolanos y venezolanas a través de su historia de como nación. En octubre pasado, nosotros, en calidad de líderes de nuestras dos denominaciones cristianas, visitamos Venezuela y vimos de primera mano las dificultades económicas causadas por las sanciones económicas.
La gente en los EE. UU. y en Venezuela están enfocados en invertir tiempo, atención y recursos para proteger a sus seres queridos del COVID-19. Por ello, nosotros, y nuestra contraparte en Venezuela, estamos profundamente alarmados por el anuncio del despliegue de barcos de la Marina de los EE. UU. Hacia Venezuela. Como ya le hemos indicado a usted en comunicaciones anteriores sobre este tema, estamos profundamente convencidos de que cualquier intervención militar de los Estados Unidos en Venezuela agravará la crisis actual, y esto adquiere una proporción mayor en este momento de pandemia global.
Le exigimos encarecidamente que se abstenga de cualquier intervención militar en Venezuela y que preste atención al llamado global a un alto al fuego que hiciera el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas, Dr. Antonio Guterres, quien dijo: ” Ha llegado el momento de bloquear las guerras y centrarnos todos juntos en la verdadera lucha por nuestras vidas“.
Como pueblo de Dios, apreciamos la integridad de cada ser humano y le pedimos que se comprometa seriamente a una solución pacífica a esta situación. Oramos para que Estados Unidos no continúe su escalada militar contra Venezuela. Asimismo, pedimos el fin de las sanciones económicas contra ese país, que perjudican desproporcionadamente a quienes más sufren más y que pueden ser más vulnerables al COVID-19. Este es el momento de procurar un camino de sensibilidad, respeto, diálogo y reconciliación.
Que Dios le guíe con sabiduría y discernimiento en esta situación con el pueblo de Venezuela así como en el cuidado de toda la creación de Dios.
