MECC General Secretary thanks Iraqi leaders following the visit of the Pope

The Middle East Council of Churches General Secretary Dr. Michel Abs sent telegrams to both the Iraqi President Dr. Barham Salih and the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq Nechirvan Barzani, congratulating and thanking them for the exceptional reception of the Pope, the peace-bearer, to Iraq and the region and the preparations made.

“As Secretary General of the Middle East Council of Churches, joining all the churches of the region, we sincerely thank you and congratulate you for the success of His Holiness Pope Francis’ visit to Iraq and the Kurdistan region.

Your warm reception of the Pontiff and the refined humanity and openness you are known to have have been manifested in its most splendid colors. We believe, with you, that openness is the destiny of humanity and the key to progress and prosperity. We wish you and our beloved Iraq that struggled with tragedies, permanent stability.”

Abs wished for the Kurdistan region to remain the destination of those looking for safety and new life opportunities under Barzani’s leadership.
