Prayer Alert and Call for Action for Dr. Denis Mukwege
From the All Africa Conference of Churches
September 10, 2020
Ecumenical greetings from the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC).
We have received news of death threats against Dr. Denis Mukwege and his family from one of our member churches in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and would like to ask you to pray for him and his family.
The mission of the church on earth is a prophetic mission to enlighten but also to denounce evil. For years, Pastor Dr. Denis Mukwege risked his life by denouncing human rights violations in the troubled Easter part of DRC. In a very difficult context, he helped thousands of raped, injured, and traumatized women and did a lot to publicize their plight, as well as sensitized and mobilized the international community to be sensitive to the uncontrolled epidemic of sexual violence in the eastern DRC. Dr. Denis Mukwege has long been outspoken about the need for accountability for the years of attacks in eastern Congo that have killed thousands of people and has frequently been threatened by armed groups for his calls to bring perpetrators to justice.
Faithful to its Vision of Churches in Africa together for life, peace, justice, and dignity, the All Africa Conference of Churches would like to:
Ask you to pray for Dr. Denis Mukwege and his family
Ask you to pray for peace and stability in the Eastern part of DRC
As we pray, the AACC will continue to call on Leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo to provide physical protection to Dr. Mukwege, his family, and his team; and on all parties to the conflict to work towards restoration of peace and stability in the Eastern DRC.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” (Matthew 5:9)
