The No Way to Treat A Child campaign has spearheaded efforts in Congress to advance Palestinian children’s rights. Its main success this year has been supporting Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN) and the introduction of H.R. 2407, the “Promoting Human Rights for Palestinian Children Living Under Israeli Military Occupation Act.” The bill prohibits U.S. taxpayer funding for the military detention of children in any country, including Israel. H.R. 2407 seeks to promote justice, equality and human rights generally, as well as by ensuring that U.S. financial assistance provided to Israel specifically is not used to support widespread and institutionalized ill-treatment against Palestinian children detained by Israeli forces and prosecuted in Israeli military courts that lack basic fair trial protections.
Between 500 and 700 Palestinian children are detained by and prosecuted in Israeli military courts each year. Since 2000, more than 10,000 children have been subjected to the Israeli military court system, which does not guarantee their rights of due process, highlighting the two-tiered system of justice in the occupied Palestinian territory—Israeli civil courts for Israeli settlers, and Israeli military courts for Palestinians.
The United Church of Christ and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) have passed national resolutions in support of Palestinian children’s rights.
